The next day we walked down Duke of Gloucester Street and took pictures of all of the Christmas decorations on the Colonial buildings. They only use natural things--unless it is at a business. Can you find the one with coffee beans? How about oyster shells? It was a beautiful
day--about 76*!
Much colder the next day 54* and breezy. We visited Jamestown to see the new Visitor's Center and the Archearium (isn't that a funny word?)--that's where the artifacts from the digs are shown and explained.
Rode the James River Ferry to Scotland (Surry Co, Virginia). Note the gulls and cormorants on the pilings. The white pillar on the shore is Jamestown.
Drove to Smithfield and saw the packing plant decorated with Santa's sleigh being pulled by pigs. After lunch we drove to Benn's Church and visited St. Luke's Church. This is the oldest church in continuous use in the United States, built in 1632. One of my ancestors on my mother's father's line helped built the church and is buried there (well his grave is there--his remains are in the Smithsonian for the time being, part of the DNA testing collection.) So many items are from the 1600s and it is lovely.
Our last day it was 76* again, we shopped, swam and sunned and then drove to Virginia Beach to see the Christmas light show along the boardwalk and the beach--the cars actually drive on the boardwalk. The first picture is sunset over the Chesapeake Bay.
The light show was fantastic--wish that I had had a video camera!
